2018 Big A Awards - Athletic & Academic Scholarship Recipients

On June 5, 2018, students and families gathered in the Allen HS auditorium for a celebration of athletics and academics. The following scholarships and awards were distributed to our incredible students: 

Eugene H. Rosenberg Memorial Award
The Eugene H Rosenberg Memorial Award is given in memory of Eugene H. Rosenberg, a student manager of Allentown High School from 1945 to 1947.  The recipient of the award must possess the qualities of loyalty, cooperation, and dedication to the school and the athletic program.  This year’s winner of the Eugene H Rosenberg Memorial Award recipient is Kion Andrews.   

Paul K. Clymer Award
This award is presented by the William Allen Athletic Department to the senior female and male varsity letter winners who have achieved the highest scholastic average.   The 2018 Paul K. Clymer recipients are female – Ameila Wilt and male – Ngun Thawng 

Paul K. Clymer Foundation Award
This award is given in memory of Paul K. Clymer, a former coach and athletic director at Allentown High School for more than three decades.  The 2018 recipient earned 4 varsity letters in wrestling and will be attending East Stroudsburg University next fall.  The 2018 Paul K. Clymer Foundation Award Recipient is Justin Pezolt.

Tony Perilla Memorial Award
The Tony Perilla Memorial Award is presented to a student-athlete that participated in two sports, preferably football and baseball, the two sports in which Tony Perilla participated and coached while at Allen High School.    This year’s recipient participated in football and will be attending Anna Maria College in the fall.  The 2018 Tony Perilla Memorial Award recipient is David Velazquez.

Jonathan P. Hoffstetter Memorial Scholarship
This award is given in memory of Jon Hoffstetter, a student-athlete at William Allen from 1990-91.  The award is given to a player who exemplifies Jon’s love for soccer and desire to display good sportsmanship, be a leader by example and a gentleman in victory and defeat. The 2018 Jonathan P. Hoffstetter Memorial Scholarship Award Recipient is Ngun Thawng.

Noland H. Osmun Memorial Scholarship
The award is given to an outstanding senior male on the football team who plans to further his education.This year’s recipient will be attending Anna Maria College come this fall.  The 2018 Noland H. Osmun Memorial Scholarship Award Winner is Trinidad Velazquez.

Debbie Steel-Pete Radocha Memorial Award – Female
The Debbie Steel-Pete Radocha Memorial Award – Female is presented in memory of Debbie Steel, Class of 1992, is given to a female who successfully combined academics and athletics among her among her athletic peers.  The 2018 Debbie Steel-Pete Radocha Memorial Award – Female Recipient is Kion Andrews. 

Debbie Steele-Pete Radocha Memorial Award - Male
The Debbie Steel-Peter Radocha Memorial Award – Male is presented in memory of Pete Radocha, Class of 1992, presented to a senior male who participated in either basketball or baseball who best displayed the leadership characteristics that Pete portrayed on the basketball court and on the baseball diamond.  The 2018 Debbie Steel-Peter Radocha Memorial Award – Male Recipient is Malik Gordon. 

Frank X. Devers Memorial Award
The Frank X Devers Award is given to senior male/female student-athlete that exemplified outstanding dedication, passion, drive, and commitment to his/her sport.  The 2018 Frank X. Devers Memorial Award winner is Isis Russell.

George “Fritz” Halfacre Memorial Scholarship 
The George “Fritz” Halfacre Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of George “Fritz” Halfacre, former Head Football Coach at William Allen High School.  The award is presented to a senior male student-athlete that participated in football or track that displayed strong competitive spirit and sportsmanship.  The 2018 George “Fritz” Halfacre Memorial Scholarship Recipient is Tereek Johnson.


2018 William Allen Athletic Department Special Recognition Awards

Girls Basketball - Kion Andrews 
William Allen High School presents this Special Recognition Award for being selected to the 2018 PIAA 6A Girls Basketball All-State 3rd Team. William Allen High School presents this basketball to recognize and honor your outstanding achievement of scoring 1080 points in your career while at William Allen High School. 

Canary Award - Principal Luke Shafnisky
For being a strong advocate for athletics while at William Allen through your attendance at Allen Athletic Events throughout the season and post-season during the fall, winter and spring seasons since you became the Bird in October of 2013. 
For providing as much allowable/available funds to the athletic department as you popossibly could in order to assist in providing a positive, rewarding experience for all who has participated in the Canaries Athletic Program over the past five years. 
For doing what most Principals would NOT even think of, such as, riding in the William Allen Marching Band Bus with Tommy Bower, seating in the JBC Press on a Friday Night to announce the Canaries Football Game, 
For all of the above and much, much more. The William Allen Athletic Department Staff would like to present the Canary Award for your dedication and commitment to the student-athletes of WAHS while Principal at WAHS from 2013-2018 school years. 


2018 William Allen Outstanding Female and Male Athlete of the Year
These awards were selected by the 2017-18 William Allen Athletic Staff using the following criteria: 
• Must have participated in at least 2 sports at William Allen in Senior Year
• Be in good academic standing
• Has maintained good citizenship 

Female Outstanding Athlete of the Year
This year’s recipient of the 2018 Female Outstanding Athlete of the Year has earned a total of 10 Varsity Letters while participating in cross country, girls’ soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field.  She was a captain and leading scorer for the 2018 Allen Girls’ Soccer Team.  She was a 3 year qualifier for the District XI Cross Country Championship Meet and qualified for EPC and District XI Track and Field Championship Meets while at William Allen.  Next fall, she will be attending Northampton Community College. 
The 2018 Female Outstanding Athlete of the Year is Startesha James. 


Male Outstanding Athlete of the Year 
This year’s recipient of the 2018 Male Outstanding Athlete of the Year has earned a total of 8 Varsity Letters while participating in football, basketball, and track and field.
In his two seasons on the boys varsity basketball team, he assisted the team in winning the EPC Championship and qualifying in District and PIAA State Playoffs.  A 4 year varsity letter winner and 2 time captain on the Canaries Football Team.  His junior year, he threw for 1,250 yards.  Next fall, he will be attending Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA, where he will be a member of the 2018 Falcons Football Team.  

The 2018 Male Outstanding Athlete of the Year is Romeo James-Wright

Academic Scholarships

AEA Joy Helm Scholarship
Given to a student who plans to study education.
This was given to Kilber Rubio, Lehigh Carbon Community College. He also received the Gloria Cowdrick Scholarship.

Francis Appleton Scholarship
This is for a student who excels in the area of media. It goes to Amelia Wilt who will attend Temple University.       She is also receiving the Marguerite H. Finizzi Scholarship
for a senior pursuing a career in English or Journalism related field and the Student Government Association Scholarship for outstanding dedication and service to the WAHS student government.

Allentown School District Foundation Beisel Memorial Scholarship 
For a senior planning on studying pharmacology or medicine - It goes to Nathali Mercedes who will attend Cedar Crest College. 

Ivan Bixler Scholarship 
For an LCTI student who plans on attending a 2 or 4 year trade school or university. It goes to Karina Velez who will attend Penn State Lehigh Valley.

Kelly Gallagher Scholarship
For a National Honor Society Member who is pursuing higher education and has demonstrated courage, determination and good character. It goes to Natalie Cordero who will attend the University of Virginia. 
She is also receiving the Allentown School distric Foundation Kline Scholarship for high academic work and involvement in activities

Helen Gearhard Scholarship
For a student who excelled in English. It goes to Victoria Durgin who will attend Susquehanna University. She is also receiving the Outstanding Writer Scholarship, for a  student who demonstrates the qualities of an outstanding writer, the Student Government Association Scholarship
for outstanding dedication and service to the WAHS student government and a Good Citizenship Award from Senator Pat Browne’s office.

The Good Citizenship Award from Senator Pat Browne is 
Jordy Mercedes who will attend Lehigh University
He is also receiving a certificate in recognition of his service as a student representative to the School Board.

Allentown School District Hunsberger Scholarship
For a student who plans to study in a math-related field. It goes to Noah Roth who will attend Lehigh Carbon Community College. 

Allentown School District Foundation Francis & Mary Kelly Scholarship 
For a student attending college. This goes to Henry Funes who plans to attend Lincoln Technical Institute. 

George Khoury Memorial
For an outstanding senior who intends to pursue a career in the medical profession.  It goes to Kathlyn Dias who will attend Cedar Crest College. 

Leiby Scholarship
For a student who shows good moral character. It goes to Tiffany Serra who will attend Cornell College

Dr. John F. McHugh Leadership Scholarship
For a senior who has demonstrated leadership abilities among peers, faculty and community. It goes to Lennyshka Villegas who will attend Cedar Crest College. 

Honorable Madaline Palladino Scholarship
For the female student who has the highest academic standing in the senior class. It goes to Hannah Langkamer-Smith who will attend Temple University. 

Public Service Scholarship 
For a student who has done noteworthy public service.   
It goes to Mariah Phillips who will attend Lehigh Carbon Community College and Northampton Community College. 

Allentown School District Foundation George Reddinger Memorial Scholarship
For a student demonstrating financial need and attending a 2 or 4 year college. It goes to Mijail Ventura who will attend Lehigh Carbon Community College.

Jya C Riegel Award
For a senior student who is in good academic standing, a good citizen and has overcome adversity and will attend a two or four year college or trade school. It goes to Claire Patterson who will attend Lehigh Carbon Community College. 

Ed Rourke Memorial Scholarship
For a senior pursuing higher education. It goes to Yolesy Suriel Ramirez who will attend Lehigh Carbon Community College

Eleanor Shoemaker Award 
For a student pursuing higher education. Two recipients:  Jean Mendez Perez who will attend Lehigh Carbon Community College and  Rossleidy Vargas who will attend Cedar Crest College

Clarence Siegfried Scholarship 
For an outstanding senior pursuing a career in business. 
It goes to Shadi Eldawayati who will attend Moravian College.

Sara Steinberg Scholarship 
For a graduating female student who has participated in the band or band front and exemplifies love of life, learning and interest in others. It goes to Jenny Martinez who will attend Penn State University Lehigh Valley who is also being recognized for her service as a student representative to the School Board.

Ruth Wagner Scholarship - Five Recipients 
Maria Flores Vilchez who will attend Kutztown University
Bobby Jo Jones who will attend Kutztown University. She is also receiving the Allentown School District Foundation Ruth Kistler Scholarship for a senior who has excelled in social studies 
Rakeisha Nolan who will attend Kutztown University
Jasmin Ramirez who will attend Penn State University Worthington.
 She is also receiving the LoPinto Art Scholarship.
Alexis Tavarez who will attend St. John’s University

WILLIAM ALLEN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1963 SCHOLARSHIP 
For a senior who will pursue higher education and has been actively involved in community service during their high school years. It goes to Jason Spiegelman who will attend West Chester University. 
 
The Roland J. Wotring Scholarship
In memory of M. Louise Neuweiler Wotring is a scholarship for a well-rounded senior who will attend a two or four year college. $4500/year goes to Kailyn Gunter who will attend Arcadia University and Matthew Miranda who will attend Temple University

Barbara Zwikl Scholarship 
For a student who will major in theater arts, either performance or technical. It goes to Josephine LaTorres who will attend DeSales University. She is also receiving the Timothy Dolan Scholarship which is for a student who will travel or study abroad during college, the NEHF Music Scholarship and the Liberty Bell Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2018 Good Citizen Award

Parent Liason Scholarship
For students who have been successful in their academic careers with the added support of their parents. Two recipients: 
Doribel Mena Paulino who will attend LaSalle University. She is also receiving the Robert Mentzell Memorial Scholarship which is for a student who will study in the health and/or physical education fields.

Alberto Ramon Zambrano who will attend Wilkes University
He is also receiving the ASDF Kehnel Memorial Scholarship for a student who plans to study a business-related field.
