The Allentown School District is excited to announce the selection of Mr. Shannon M. Mayfield as the new principal for William Allen High School. The appointment is expected to be approved at the next board meeting scheduled for July 26, 2018.

“Mr. Mayfield brings a lifetime of educational experience to the Allentown School District and we are excited to have a highly skilled leader at the helm of William Allen,” said Superintendent Thomas Parker. “Part of the search process was to find a school leader whose personal teaching philosophy aligned with the new mission and vision outlined in the Strategic Framework. Mr. Mayfield’s commitment to student success and dedication to creating a safe and nurturing environment for students to learn certainly aligns with the District’s long-term goals,” continued Parker.

A former math teacher, Mayfield has demonstrated the ability to successfully lead a large urban school building by motivating and inspiring staff and students. During his time as an administrator, he routinely saw gains in attendance, declines in disciplinary referrals, and increased community-based partnerships across multiple schools. Mr. Mayfield’s background as a US Air Marshal and Georgia State Trooper give him a unique perspective on how to implement policies that ensure the safety and security of students.

Mayfield returns to Allen HS where he served as principal in 2012, connecting quickly with the student body, but ultimately leaving to lead a multi-year turnaround effort at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. Continuing his pattern of rapid changes that bring success, Mayfield moved briefly to Michigan as the Title 1 Dean of Students at Old Redford Academy Preparatory High School, one of Detroit’s highest performing charter schools. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at McCann School of Business and Technology.

Mayfield holds teaching, principal and Superintendent certifications in Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Philosophy, Educational Leadership from Gwynedd Mercy University.

Mayfield’s selection follows the internal appointment of Mrs. Katrina Griffin, who was named principal for Dodd Elementary School, replacing another long time District educator Karen Boardman who retired at the end of the school year. Griffin’s new role was made official at the June 28, 2018 board meeting.
